It is believed that we learn a lot from observing things around us rather than just reading about it. A practical experience is hard to forget and sometimes it gets etched deeply in our memories that it has a significant impact on the way we grow up.
Many of us are into the habit of giving excuses for everything under the sun. We look at people giving excuses and getting away with it (most of the time). Seeing people do this day in and day out, we get drawn towards it, involuntarily. Initially, we might stammer and stutter, but with practice, we would master the art of giving excuses. I happened to read somewhere that the very process of trying to think up of a story to cover up the mess, makes children creative. Absolute rubbish I would say. It’s things like these which give others a false sense of being right.

Great article. I believe what you are saying stands true for individuals trying to bring a (greater?) degree of self-discipline in their lives.
Excuses are a special case of lying. I am not really too sure about lying being that bad. In my relatively short life, I have had 2-3 (office politics) occasions when lying could have been of benefit, or at least could have saved me from retribution. Sometimes I think what if I had been a little more creative in those situations?
I was in a boarding school where they always tried emulating the military (routine and dresses and all), and you just had to do what your seniors told you to. Running and other punishments all the time. Somewhat like being in a reality show for 4 years with the occasional vacation. A bit of lying at time was something we all took to. Were you sleeping during prep (study time)? No sir. I studied xxx. Almost like all footballers push/kick/poke/foul all other footballers.

I have been to the whole write up Ashwini. I agree so much to what you had to say. parents need to teach their kids to stand up for what they have done, be it good or bad. That ought to teach them a lot for their own good. Profound article with a good message:)

Read your article . Fairly sensible indeed.
The rubbish part as you mentioned is attributing made up stories and alibis making kids creative.
As for the acceptance of a mistake that we do, to acknowledged we erred is a gift that will ally with people who are not conceited and braggart..

The point which you conveyed is purely acceptable. But to manage kids it is hard nowadays. So we start giving lame excuses to manage them. Parents don't get enough time to spend with kids.

We Indians are born with a quality of not accepting our mistakes and living life with full of excuses. It's in our genes or maybe from what we observe day-in-day-out everytime.. School, College, Office, it happens everywhere! Lets wait for the day when someone wholeheartedly accepts his / her mistake and we slowly phase the excuses out of our lives! 🙂
